Nick, it wasn't time to say goodbye. Even if it is as we believe and we go on in an eternal cycle, I was hardly ready to say goodbye. You were my companion, my partner, my conscience, my constant source of amusement and thought. For more than 25 years I never knew what it might be like not to have you by my side, because you were always there, keeping up and helping me find the way. You will live on in me as long as I live on in this world--I would have prefered to have you with me, but to carry you in my heart is a million times better than to have never had you in my life. I go forward lost and sad, but I know that there will be a day in the future when you really will live within me, and that's how you would want it. I will think of you and I will feel hope and love.

For My Brother In Truth

Nicolas, I was thinking about the day we met, almost ten years ago now. Em had brought you with her to our Day of the Dead observances, and although the Mexican culture was new to you, you made such a wonderful effort to be a part of everything. That was you all over, never afraid to try what was new, bold in your opinions and your emotions. How could I have ever thought you would cross through the veil so soon? You have left us aching with your absence. At the same time we celebrate you and a life well lived, and we give our deepest thanks that your suffering is no more. Someday, we shall all be reunited in that place beyond the veil, and there we shall celebrate together our bond in this universe and the lifetimes that are yet to come.
